Council to look into Arkell boy”™s request for b-ball nets

Council is getting on the ball – or basketball – following a request from local boy Graham Williams.

“Hi my name is Graham and I am nine years old. I live at 57 Boreham Dr. on Arkell Road in Guelph,” he wrote.

“There are a lot of kids on our street that want to play basketball. So the problem is that we don’t have a court to play at. So I was wondering if the (committee) could help us with the problem and build one at our park with two nets.”

Councillor Matthew Bulmer asked if the request could be forwarded to the township recreation committee.

Bulmer also asked to share the information with the Puslinch Optimist Club as well.

“I know in the past, there have been several freestanding nets in the neighbourhood – which can become a hazard if placed on the road,” said Bulmer.

Obviously there is a demand for basketball nets, he added.

Mayor Dennis Lever noted that he’d driven the area the previous weekend and there were three basketball nets and one hockey net visible.

“But clearly there are some kids playing basketball.” Lever said none of the nets were close to the road.

Councillor Wayne Stokley agreed council should into the matter as well as other future needs.

He noted there were discussions about inclusion of a basketball court in the playground as part of the recreation master plan.

Councillor Susan Fielding also said she believes it would be good to see some action on the request.

Council received the correspondence and directed that it be referred to the recreation committee and that the Optimist club be made aware of the request.
